Lawn care starts from checking your soil. As most people say it is always smarter and longer lasting if you start at the root of the problem. Lawns are generally composed of soil, grass, plants & flowers. And also a good sprinkler system. But more often great lawns are just mere span of beautifully maintained grass. Compared to planting flowers it looks simpler yet it needs and focuses more on proper maintenance.

There are three general soil types namely Sandy, Loamy, and Clay soil. By knowing which type your lawn has, the easier it is to know the proper maintenance for it. Even the type of plants compatible with your soil will be easier to determine, and this information will provide you a sure list of plants that will really grow in your lawn and garden.

Sandy soils are loose soils and they drain water easily, making them have fewer nutrients and mostly acidic. Clay soils are more compact in nature. They hold more nutrients and have a high capacity of holding water. It is dense making it harder to work with but is advantageous for planting. Loamy soils on the other hand is more of a combination of sandy and clay soils, it holds more organic matters and nutrients. It has a good moisture-holding capacity and also drainage. Generally this is best kind soil to work with. But always take note that in some areas there may be combinations of soil types. Always check your area’s soil type. There is available information for such, and usually this information comes with good advice on how to manage or make the most out of your land.

Providing grass to your lawns requires choosing the right one for your yard. Grasses may all look the same to some. But there is a wide variety. Grasses may range from the type that is easily infested by insects, to low-maintenance ones, to environment –friendly ones, and to those that needs long term maintenance. Also consider the amount of sunlight that your yard receives during the day. As we all know, plants, flowers, trees, and grasses need ample amounts of sun too.

Maintenance is the key. When having lawns and grasses that are newly planted, refrain from playing or passing through it, because this affects growth. Watering is an important factor. It is needed to condition the soil before planting the seeds and of course throughout their growth. A good sprinkler system is necessary. Also do not water it too much and too little. In mowing your lawn it is advisable to do it whenever the grasses reached its 4 inches height. A reel-type mower best cuts your grasses for it generally doesn’t uproot your grass. And for fertilization always check the required amount for your lawn, proper application will provide you lower maintenance work and a greener lawn for longer span of time.

Follow these simple tips and you will have the best lawn in your neighborhood in no time.
