Basics of Home Gardening

Home gardening is a rewarding experience and it is not hard to do. To help you learn about the basics of gardening, here are some words of advice for cultivating any types of plants like herbs, flowers, shrubs, and even vegetables. All of these tips will certainly aid you to having the best and well-maintained garden.

To begin with, in order to be successful with home gardening, there are three important things that you must know about and that is, plants naturally need water, soil, and light to stay alive. If one of these 3 is not sufficient enough or not provided at all, you will grow unhealthy plants and they will die.

  • Water

This is the main food of the plants. And so, it is just natural that plants require water to live, although excessive amount is also bad for them. You will know if you are pouring enough water if the soil is not dry or hard and there shouldn’t be any water standing around the plant. More water is needed during summer days or if the plants are placed in containers. Finally, when watering the plants, avoid splashing the water on the petals and leaves because they may develop some kind of a disease.

  • Light

Generally, all plants need to be under the sunlight for around 6 to 8 hours. Then again, there may also be plants that only require less exposure to sun, so in order to be certain, you must read the labels of the plants and follow what is written there.

During the day, observe your garden carefully so as to determine how much sunlight is breaking through. Once you know where the sun shines in your garden, then that’s the best spot to place your plants.

  • Soil

Just like humans, all plants require nutrients and they can obtain this from the soil and water. So, in this case, you must use rich soil with fertilizer. The fertilizer should be the right kind for the plant that you are growing.

Moreover, a lot people put fertilizer in their plants like they are just watering it. They do this in the belief that the more fertilizer they add, the healthier the plants will be. But this is a wrong idea, keep in mind that fertilizer should be use as needed and it is not a plant food that should be fed regularly.

Although, is it true that the addition of fertilizer is important, but you have to make sure that you are giving just the right dosage. You will have healthy foliage and flowers as a result of the correct amount of fertilizer. On the other hand, too little or too much fertilizing can result to problems with your plant’s health and could lead to its loss of life.

Additionally, excessive fertilizing can result to increased pruning and could make the plant to grow beyond its normal growth range. If they overshot, they will be more prone to breakage or can get easily injured when the cold days approached.

Also, your soil must be a little loose so that there will be ample room for the roots to grow and spread out.

There now, you see, home gardening is simple. Just start out at a snail’s pace and you will soon be growing beautiful lush and lively plants that you can be proud of.
